Children and Babies Eye Care Treatments

We recommend that parents bring their babies for their first routine eye examination at around six months old - or before if they know that there is anyone in their family with defects such as squints or "lazy eyes".

Eyes are a great indicator of general health so a full eye examination can often tell you a surprising amount about all sorts of other things going on in the child’s body that might be prevented from developing if spotted early enough.   This is another important reason to go for regular check-ups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can eye conditions affect my child’s learning & development?

The eyes are affected by and integrate with the rest of the body so when something goes wrong with your visual system in general, rather than just your sight, it can have repercussions on co-ordination, balance, development and learning.

Can my child’s learning difficulties be linked to dyslexia?

Optometrists aim to follow an evidence-based approach to investigation, diagnosis and treatment of suspected visual correlates of leaning difficulties.

If your child is dyslexic or is under-achieving at school we recommend a fuller more in depth investigation than a routine Eye Examination or Sight Test to investigate visual involvement in learning underachievement, dyslexia and dyspraxia.

Can visual problems cause educational underachievement?

Vision and visual problems may include not only obvious sight or focusing problems such as hypermetropia (long-sight) or astigmatism but also more subtle problems with eye muscle control and strength (particularly vergence) and accommodation (focusing). At your child’s eye examination, we can assess the child’s eye and advise the best eye care treatments to suit your child’s needs.
