What is Myopia?

Myopia, also known as short-sightedness or near-sightedness, is a common condition where close-up vision is generally clear, but further away objects are blurred.

Myopia is usually managed with glasses and/or contact lenses to allow clear distance vision.

What causes Myopia?

We see clear images when the rays of light from an object in the distance come to a focused point at the retina (the back of the eye). Myopia occurs when the rays are focused in front of the retina. The cause of this is either a cornea (front of the eye) that is too steeply curved or, more commonly, an eyeball that is too long, or a combination of the two.

Myopia in Young Children - How we can help!

At Nova Optical, we are highly experienced in myopia control in young children and adults.

The percentage of people who develop short sightedness (myopia) is increasing alarmingly every year. The eyes of some children and adults are more susceptible to the onset and development of myopia.

Our aim of the myopia treatment is to try to prevent the development and progression of the myopia in young children. Eye examinations of children should start at a very early age. We recommend that early eye exams should take place when the child is about 5 years old in order to best treat myopia/short-sightedness.

At the child’s eye exam, we will carry out an in depth assessment of the health and function of the eyes. Depending on the age of the child, family history, the health and on the prescription, we can then tailor a myopia treatment programme for the individual person. The aim of our myopia treatments are either to slow down the escalating myopia, controlling it, or where possible preventing it by taking remedial action, and offering our specialised advice to the young person or adult.
