Cancer Council recommends wearing close-fitting wraparound sunglasses and a sun smart hat to provide the best protection for your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

UV radiation can cause short-term eye problems; for example, excessive blinking, swelling and difficulty looking at strong light. Over time, exposure to UV can cause serious or permanent eye damage:

  • Cataracts (cloudiness of the lens), which may require surgery.

  • Solar keratopathy (cloudiness of the cornea).

  • Cancer of the conjunctiva (the membrane covering the white part of the eye).

  • Skin cancer of the eyelids and around the eyes.

  • Pterygium (pronounced tur-rig-i-um), which is an overgrowth of the conjunctiva onto the cornea.

Finding Your Perfect Fit!

When it is time to get sunglasses, the frames should complement the shape of your face. Here is a starting point around which type of frames will best suit your face shape.

Flatter your face shape by choosing frames that are neither too small nor too large and are in proportion to the size of your face. The top line of the frames should generally follow the curve of the eyebrows, and the frames should feel comfortable and not slip down your nose or move on your face when you smile.

Of course, you can ignore the above and simply pick a pair because you love them!
